Isle Royale is a 45 mile long island in the northeast part of Lake Superior. It was recognized as a national park in 1940 and made an International Biosphere Reserve in 1981.
The total area of the park is 850 square miles which includes the big main island, 450 smaller islands and about 4 miles of lake extended from the island. Even though the island is only 17 miles off of Minnesota's north shore, it is within Michigan's territory.
To visit Isle Royale, you can catch a boat from Haughton or Copper Harbor, Michigan or Grand Portage, Minnesota. There are planes available but the boats are a more reliable option. They all have different fares and schedules.
